I decided to start up a series called Andromeda Coast's "Song Of The Month".

Once a month I'll share with you my favorite song over the past month.

This month, January, is an ironic one, as the song is called...

"December"

  • Length: 4:15
  • Times I Listened To It: 50

What Makes This Song Awesome

As with every song, the most important part is the melody, and this song as a great and catchy synth melody that's repeated throughout.

The soft, airy vocals complement the whimsical guitars and simple, driving groove well, making this song heavenly blend of Rock and Synthwave.

Pretty much every time I hit the 3:00 mark in the song I find myself turning up the volume and just soaking in the slick guitar, pumping sawtooth synth pad, and vibrating synth stab that plays on every quarter note in the background.

And then airy vocals come in again, and you can't really hear what they're saying, but you feel the emotion and the urgency rise, and you're transported to another time and place.

It's epic!

My absolute favorite thing might be when that aforementioned little vibrating synth stab in the background breaks from its pattern at the end of the measure and vibrates a couple extra times, like at the 3:08 mark.

It's small and subtle, but oh so amazing!

Lyrics

(My Best Guess)

I couldn't find the lyrics for this song posted anywhere online, so here is my best approximation of the lyrics:

Don't give up too fast that's what everybody said

But I've got my mindset caught in your bloody veins

I hate your comeback "The devil's only in the detail"

She had a long month December working retail

I can't make it and wouldn't try

It takes hold of me every night

So jump in I think we only get worse

It got real I think I really meant that

Now keep your back straight so everyone will say

He drinks the good stuff something everyone should take on

Now let my mind slip down into the deep end

Now drink the good stuff learning how to hold and keep them close

So jump in I think we only get worse

It got real I think I really meant that

You're the only thing that you want to do

I'm the only other dream with you

Tell me everything that you want to do

I'm the only other dream with you

I like how the lyrics are vague, so I can't really tell what the song is about, but I do get the sense of loss; a relationship that fell apart despite his best efforts to make it work.

Perhaps this relationship fell apart in the month of December as she was pulled into her retail job, or at least that's an excuse.

He tries to restore the relationship, not quite understanding what went wrong, but it's lost for good...

Or I could be completely wrong, but that's what I got out of it, which is why I like vague lyrics in songs, rather than being beaten over the head with the meaning.

When they're vague, you can take your own meaning.

Certainly a sad song, but I feel like there is something therapeutic about listening to sad songs.

And yet, the music itself communicates a feeling of hope, a bittersweet silver-lining running throughout the tale that endings are just the beginning of something new and better.

If I had to pick which Andromeda Coast song this one is the closest to "December", I'd probably have to pick "Last Snow".

Both are softer songs, and they fall more into the soft-rock category than electronic.

Thanks for reading!
